The experiences of an electrical engineer This is a series depicting events in the working life of Brian Watt, head of a section of Carlisle & Baker Ltd., a large engineering firm based in Newhaven. Episode 8 Meeting specification requirements Carlisle and Baker Limited have received an enquiry from Canada for indoor switchgear. It includes circuit-breakers for switching four 600 MW generators. They are unable to meet the specification as they do not make those large breakers. Brian Watt and John Hunter, an expert on breakers, discuss the details of the specification. Brian We should consider whether it is worth, in the long run, to make those generator circuit-breakers. John Indeed, we shall. Our marketing section should investigate into that matter as to profitability, manufacture and sales. Brian The enquiry includes four breakers for switching 600 MW generators direct as well as distribution equipment. However, the major equipment should be made by one company. And think of it: It's the seond enquiry of this kind in six weeks. John Yes, it certainly is an order worth having in our company. And our competitive chances of obtaining that order would be very good if it weren't for those big breakers. Brian More and more electricity suppliers are changing to direct generator switching instead of the older method of switching on the high-voltage side. John Some time ago there was an article in the Electrical Review called „A return to generator direct switching.“ Did you read it? Brian Yes, I did. Some new aspects are there in it. John What really bothers me is the fact that these breakers are, up to now, needed only in smaller numbers. There's no guarantee for repeat orders. Brian We mustn't forget the other equipment. The enquiry also calls for switchboards, control consoles, electric motors, and think of the amount of cable required. My guess: the whole tender would be worth two million pounds. That's why we should put some effort into it. John I fully accept your opinion. Our people in the research department are not working at full stretch. At this moment they would be happy to have a task like this at hand. Brian All right, I would propose a meeting with some more experts and our director.
