Episode 1: Preparing for a trip abroad Brian Watt, the central figure of this series, is summoned by his managing director, Kenneth Vail. He is requested to go on a business trip to Mexico. Some faults have arisen in the 4.16 switchgear section of Durango Power Station, and Brian is to investigate the cause. He is also to pay a visit to Mr. Dorigo of the Mexican Power Authority. Colleague: Hold on, he's coming in now. Brian, you've just arrived in time. - You're wanted on the telephone. Brian: Hallo, Watt here. Alice: Good morning, Brian. This is Alice speaking. Would you please come up to Kenneth. He wants to see you as soon as possible. Brian: All right, Alice. I'll come up immediately. Kenneth: Ah, Brian. Do sit down. There's a spezial mission for you, to Mexico again. Could you leave the day after tomorrow for Durango? Brian: One day later would suit me better. The short-circuit tests for the Taunton equipment ought to be completed beforehand. Kenneth: Of course, I nearly forgot. Brian: I'm rather puzzled, too. Durango Power Station has been operating satisfactorily for six months now. Kenneth: Generally speaking, yes. But there have been a few faults in the 4.16 kV section over the last four weeks. I've just had a call from Ben Parker, the new man in our Mexican subsidiary. Brian: Do you know more about the trouble there? Kenneth: I understand the feeder breakers of the forced draught fans are causing service interruptions on the auxiliaries. But they haven't found the cause as yet. Brian: Don't you think our people over there could tackle the problem? Kenneth: Yes, certainly they could. But you've also to pay a visit to Mr. Dorigo, the chief engineer of the Power Authority. They are preparing a specification for the extension of Valle de Mexico Power Station. Brian: I see the point. Kenneth: It will impress them to see how well we're looking after the equipment, so long after commissioning. Brian: So it's really a goodwill tour? Kenneth: Indeed, it is. All the same, as you're our switchgear expert you'll find the source of trouble faster than any of the local engineers. However, there are still a few items which we ought to discuss before you leave. experiences Erfahrungen, Erlebnisse; series Serie, Reihe; to depict schildern, darstellen; event Ereignis, Vorfall; head of a section Leiter einer Gruppe; engineering firm technischer Betrieb; based in mit Stammhaus in; trip abroad Auslandsreise. to prepare vorbereiten; to summon rufen, kommen lassen, auffordern; to request (höflich) bitten, ersuchen; fault Fehler, Defekt, Störung; arisen (to arise) aufgetreten, auch: entstanden, entsprungen; 4.16 kV switchgear 4,16-kV-Schaltanlage(n); power station Kraftwerk; to investigate untersuchen, erforschen; cause Ursache; to pay a visit einen Besuch abstatten; power authority Energiebehörde. colleague Kollege; to arrive ankommen; in time rechtzeitig; immediate(ly) sofort; to suit passen; short-circuit test Kurzschlussprüfung; equipment Gerät(e), Ausrüstung; ought sollte(n); to complete fertigstellen; puzzled überrascht, verwirrt; to operate betreiben, steuern, arbeiten; satisfactory (-rily) zufriedenstellend; subsidiary Zweigbetrieb, Tochtergesellschaft; feeder breaker Speiseschalter (als Leistungsschalter); forced draught fan hier: Kesselgebläse; to cause verursachen; service interruption Betriebsunterbrechung; auxiliaries Hilfsbetriebe; to tackle fertigwerden mit; extension Erweiterung; I see the point Ich sehe, was Sie meinen; to impress beeindrucken; commissioning Inbetriebsetzung, Übergabe; item Punkt G.
