The experiences of an electrical engineer This is a series depicting events in the working life of Brian Watt, head of a section of Carlisle & Baker Ltd., a large engineering firm based in Newhaven. Episode 2: Investigations in Durango Power Station Brian Watts meets his friend Ben Parker at the subsidiary of Carlisle & Baker Ltd. They drive to Durango Power Station to look into the cause of some breaker faults. The source of the trouble proves to be nothing serious; it turns out that the overload relays of both draught fan motors have insufficient setting ranges. Brian: Good morning. Receptionist: Good morning, Sir. What can I do for you? Brian: I would like to see Mr. Parker. My name is Watt. Receptionist: Oh yes. You are Mr. Watt from our head office. We've been expecting you. I'll take you to see Mr. Parker straight away. Would you come this way, please. His office is on the second floor. - Here we are. (The receptionist knocks, and opening the door announces the arrival of Brian.) Ben: Hello, Brian. How are you? Nice to see you again. Brian: Fine, thanks. And how are things with you? Ben: I'm fine, too. Things are coming along well here. (After some general conversation on families, holidays and colleagues, they leave the office and drive to Durango Power Station.) Brian: This ist he 4.16 kV switchgear section, I take it ... Ben: Yes, it is. We've just switched over from Unit 1 to Unit 2 so now we can investigate the FD fan 1. The control circuits are located here. Brian: Let me first check the relay settings, they are often the root of the rouble. - Hm - I thought as much, insufficient setting range. Ben: But let's have a look at the motor rating plate, to make sure. Brian: Quite right, we shouldn't jump to any conclusions. (After scrutinising the motor data, and making a quick calculation on his pocket calculator.) Ben: I've just calculated the inrush currents, they do seem higher than the settings would permit. Brian: Well, as we can't set the relays any higher, we'll have to replace them with the next larger size. Ben: Well, we are lucky. They're GEC MX relays. GEC has stores in Mexico City. Brian: It certainnly is hot in here. Is there anywhere we can go and cool down? Ben: Yes, of course. investigation Untersuchung, Nachforschung; power station Kraftwerk; cause [kz] Ursache; subsidiary [sbsidjri] Tochtergesellschaft; circuit-breaker [skitbreik] Leistungsschalter; fault [flt] Fehler, Defekt; source [ss] Ursache, Quelle; to prove [pruv] sich erweisen; serious [siris] ernst(haft); overload relay [rilei] Überstromrelais; draught fan motor [draft fn mout] Gebläsemotor; insufficient [insfint] unzureichend, ungenügend, nicht genug; setting range Einstellbereich. head office Stammhaus; to expect erwarten; straight away sofort; receptionist hier: Empfangsdame; to knock anklopfen; to announce ankündigen; arrival Eintreffen, Ankunft; to come along well sich günstig entwickeln; switchgear [swit i] Schaltanlage(n) Schaltgerät(e); section Abschnitt, Teil; to switch over umschalten; to investigate untersuchen; control circuits [kn troul s kits] Steuerstromkreise; setting Einstellung; I thought as much das habe ich mir gleich gedacht. motor rating plate Motor-Leistungsschild; to jump to any conclusion voreilig Schlüsse (Schlussfolgerungen) ziehen; to scrutinise [skrutinaiz] (genau) überprüfen; data [deit] Daten; inrush currents Einschaltstrom, Anlaufstrom; to permit gestatten; to set einstellen; to replace auswechseln; size Größe; store Lager; to cool down sich abkühlen (oder: erfrischen).
