Who was... Henry Ellis Bass, a physicist and one of the world's most famous acoustics researchers whose work helped track tornadoes and monitor nuclear tests died in Mississippi in 2008 at the age of 64 after a long illness. Bass, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, joined the staff of the University of Mississippi in 1970 as an assistant professor in the physics department after earning his doctorate at Oklahoma State University. He served as the department's acting chairman during the 1976-77 school year. Since 1992 he served as a director of the National Center for Physical Acoustics at Ole Miss. In 1993, he was named F.A.P. Barnard Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy. Bass was said to be the driving force in the field of acoustics and applied sound to aeronautics, meteorology and military operations. He received the Acoustical Society's Silver Medal in 2006. Bass' research included efforts to improve submarine detection and to muffle the sonic booms of supersonic airplanes and missiles. In 2003, Bass and researchers at other institutions used infrasound recordings to direct the NASA investigation into the re-entry breakup of the space shuttle Columbia. More recently, he focused his efforts on completing the International Monitoring System, a worldwide network of 60 infrasound stations. In addition to alerting scientists earlier to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, the system also is intended to increase aircraft safety. acting chairman geschäftsführender Vorsitzender alert vorwarnen apply anwenden detection Erkennung, Entdecken, Ermittlung distinguished angesehen, bedeutend, hervorragend driving force treibende Kraft earn one's doctorate seinen Doktortitel erwerben earthquake Erdbeben efforts Bemühungen F.A.P. They rub it and a genie comes out. The genie says, "I'll give each of you just one wish." "Me first! Me first!" says the admin clerk. "I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat, without a care in the world." Poof! She's gone. "Me next! Me next!" says the sales rep. "I want to be in Hawaii, relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life." Poof! He's gone. "OK, you're up," the genie says to the manager. The manager looks at his watch says, "I want those two back in the office after lunch." Moral of the story: Always let your boss have the first say. Lesson 2: A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A rabbit asked him, "Can I also sit like you and do nothing all day long?" The crow answered: "Sure, why not." So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested. Suddenly a fox jumped on the rabbit and ate it. Moral of the story: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very high up. admin(istration) clerk Verwaltungsangestellte/r ate (eat, ate, eaten) aß below unten, unterhalb care Sorge corporate Firmen-, Konzerncrow Krähe genie Flaschengeist have the first say zuerst reden, das erste Wort haben high up weit oben jump springen rest ruhen, ruhig sein rub reiben sales rep(resentative) Verkäufer, Vertreter suddenly plötzlich supply Vorrat, Versorgung P.
